On Tuesday, the Beijing-based Global Times newspaper, which often expresses the views of the Chinese Communist Party, said that the US must pay a cost it cannot stand if it intervenes in the South China Sea dispute by force.
The article comes less than a week before the Permanent Court of Arbitration at The Hague issues its ruling over the Philippines’ case brought against China’s South China Sea claims. China claims more than 80% of the Sea based mostly on historical claims. Rival claimants in the troubled body of water include the Philippines, Vietnam, Brunei, Malaysia and Indonesia. Taiwan’s claims are similar to Beijing’s claims.
